First Signs of Spring

I love the seasons...all of them! Some of you might think that I am "copping out" by not choosing my FAVORITE season. But I stand by statement. Here's the deal. There is something about each of them that I find amazing and fascinating. The very cycle of seasons leaves me awestruck.

For the past three months our yard has been a mucky brown landscape thanks to Old Man Winter's gifts of rain, sleet, snow and ice. Having seven hens living there doesn't help the situation either. The "girls" keep the ground active (and our patio dirty) by digging and scrounging for bugs and sprigs of grass any chance they get. This "hen help" results in a big muddy mess that our dogs then track into the house. It's all part of the process, I suppose.

This time of year - when winter is giving way to spring - is the perfect time to be outdoors. The temperature on Saturday was 75 degrees. It was gorgeous. Hard to believe just a week ago (last Saturday/Sunday) we were bracin g for almost 10 inches of snow. The warmer temps of the weekend have begun to coax out the tiniest signs of spring. Plants, long dormant during the winter months, are now beginning to stretch their "arms" and make their first official appearances. I love it! Our backyard has been a popular gathering place for all kinds of wildlife: cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, black birds, sparrows, finches, woodpeckers and more. We also have a gang of squirrels that visits often to nosh on the feeder full of corn we have out for them.

I spent Saturday morning sitting out in the backyard with the dogs, chickens, birds and squirrels. All seemed so peaceful and hopeful. The air is fresh and the sun is warm. The earth is waking up from a long winter's nap. What a beautiful weekend. Spring is on its way!
