Thoughts on life

My paternal grandfather died on Thursday at the age of 92. I was in Chicago for a work conference when I got the news. I frantically flew home to GA to be with family and celebrate his life at his service this afternoon. We, the six grandchildren, sang "Abide with Me" at the service. It was such a tender moment - something we hadn't done together in 30 years or so. His wife of 69 years, my grandmother, seems lost without him. I am not sure how one would cope with the absence of someone or something that had been a part of every waking moment of one's day for almost 70 years. At 90 she has quite a strong will and  I hope that she is able to move on as much as she can and find peace in knowing what a blessing their marriage was to them both.

Unlike so many people my age (almost 40 - yikes!), this is my FIRST grandparent that has passed away. I am so blessed to have had him in my life for so many years. He was predeceased by his son, my father, back in 1977. I hold a very special sp ot in my heart for my Granddaddy. He lived a full and very long life. He will surely be missed.

Jonatha Brooke has a song called "New Star" from her album, The Works. I find great solace in this song and hope those of you who've lost loved ones will, too. I am including the lyrics and encourage you to hop over to her website to have a listen for yourself. The lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1954 when he was sick and dying in the Brooklyn State Hospital.

Jonatha's arrangements and sweet voice bring it to life:

There's my new star in heaven tonite tonite
There's my new star in heaven tonite
I call it fatherly father "cause it shines so brite
There's my new star in heaven tonite

There's my new star in heaven tonite tonite
My new star in heaven tonite
It's when I'm gone I'll shine brite for you
My new star in heaven tonite

I see my new star in heaven tonite tonite
I see my new star in heaven tonite
I call it sisterly brother "cause it shines so brite
It's my new star in heaven tonite

There's my new star in heaven tonite tonite
My new star in heaven tonite
It's when I'm gone I'll shine brite for you
My new star in heaven tonite

I would love to hear of any special memories you may have of your grandparents.

Feel free to share them if you like.

It is, after all is said and done, our family that makes us who we are.
