It is hard to believe that it is 2010

It is hard to believe that it is 2010. I have hit the ground running on this, my 40th year of life.

Yesterday I "followed" an amazing sunset around the countryside, snapping shots with my iPhone camera and cursing the fact that I didn't have my "real" camera to capture this beauty. It struck me that what I was witnessing was a masterpiece - even if only for a fleeting moment. Within 10 minutes, the sunset gave way to darkness and the color was drained from the sky...until morning. This brilliance happens every single day and most of the time we forget to notice. We are distracted by stress, obligations, planning for tomorrow.

As busy as I have been lately, a sunset can stop me in my tracks and leave me speechless and inspired. It affirms to me that there is something bigger than each one of us individually. This is about looking beyond ourselves...dropping the cloak of selfishness and opening our eyes to the world community. Even if we start small and recognize the community in our immediate reach (family, neighborhood, school, work) - it is a start. Now, more than ever, a sense of community is critical.

Take time today (and every day) to follow a sunset until it disappears behind the horizon and remember that we are all in this together and we should honor that.
